It turned out to be a great weekend for Roush Yates and the Ford Fusions this past weekend. Carl Edwards – driver of No. 99 Kellogg’s/Cheeze-It Ford Fusion – took the win at the Federated Auto Parts 400 at Richmond International Raceway. This would be Ford’s fifth win of the season and Edward’s second victory this year.
Edwards was able to fend off Kurt Busch by just .668 seconds after passing Paul Menard’s Quaker State/Menard Chevy with just three laps remaining. He was already guaranteed in the Chase for the Sprint Cup from Saturday’s race and has added another notch in his belt now with 21 career victories.
Another Chase contender is Joey Logano, driver of No. 22 Shell Pennzoil Ford Fusion for Penske Racing who finished 22nd earning his spot in the top ten. The third Ford driver in the Chase is Greg Biffle, No. 16 Scotchgard Fusion driver for Roush Fenway Racing. That has put three Fords in the running for the 2013 Sprint Cup Championship.
The “playoffs” begin next weekend starting September 15th with the top 12 drivers at the Geico 400 at Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet, Illinois. Edwards will start fifth and Logano will start in the sixth position.
Brad Keselowski won this race last year and went on to win the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship. This season the No. 2 driver did not qualify for the Chase. 43 cars are entered into the race, but only 43 will actually compete for the Chase.
