Up the coast we traveled and went to our first race in Maine. Unity Raceway is located in Unity, ME, far from the coast and definitely in moose country. This is logging country and it showed...
The trip to Unity gave us a chance to explore inner Maine. Most of what we hear about and see photos of is the coastal areas of this state, but there is so much more, kind of like my home state of Florida.
What was different was watching the Wicked Good Vintage Racing Association cars run in several divisions that featured race cars from the '50's, 60's, and 70's.
These guys took historic cars and really competed. In one class the winner came on strong at the end and I noticed blue flames coming from his exhaust accelerating down the front straight.
For those not in the know, that is tell-tale of nitrous oxide use and I saw similar use by Gary Balough at New Smyrna Speedway back in the mid-'70's when he converted his fire extinguisher into a nitrous bottle... Guess these teams are just like all of the others, doing whatever it takes to win.
