Upon arriving at Potomac Speedway, I went to the stands to get a good look at the way the officials were preparing the track surface. What they did paid off...
I noticed the use of what is called a spiked or cleat roller that has long spikes used to penetrate the surface and create holes so the water spread onto the track can soak far into the material.
In doing so, the surface is wet to a greater depth and does not dry out nearly as quickly as many other tracks where only the top few inches are penetrated.
As the night of racing went on at Potomac, I waited for the inevitable cloud of dust...but it never came. The track never went to a dry/slick condition and maintained grip to the very end. This was an example of more good promoting on the part of the track management.
