Clint Elkins is the General Manager of Carolina Speedway. We talked to him about his track and more...
Carolina Speedway benefits from the close proximity to Charlotte and that large population base. But that doesn't stop the owners from making this event the best that it can be for both competitors and the many fans.
When I say many, I mean sold out and turned away in some cases. When the USAC sprint cars came a few weeks ago, the local sheriff department had to turn spectators away due to not having room to park any more cars.
This track has a storied history dating back to 1962 and participants in the promotion and management of the track include none other than Humpy Wheeler, the well known promotor for Charlotte (Lowes) Motor Speedway for years.
Not only are the attendance figures good, the facility is very clean and well maintained. The race track is very high banked and fast and we did see some two groove racing.
Clint was worried about the speeds the late model cars run that causes single lane racing at times. Plans are in the works to reduce the banking angle of the track to slow the cars and possibly create more racing grooves.
Single groove tracks is a topic we will be discussing soon. It takes the excitement out of dirt racing when it becomes very difficult to pass, even for quicker cars following noticeably slower cars.
