Josh Richards won his first WoO Late Model Series Championship while Donny Schatz took home his fourth WoO Sprint Car Title this past weekend.
Could there be a better time to be a fan of dirt racing? First off Jason Meyers entered the series finale at The Dirt Track at Lowe's Motor Speedway a mere 25 points behind Schatz. It was shaping up to be the closest-ever battle for the World of Outlaws title in series history. As it was when the checkered flag fell Meyers wound up third, three spots ahead of Schatz. But that wasn't enough as he ended the season second in points, 19 points behind the champion in what was ultimately the closest finish in series history. In addition, Schatz became on the second driver in history to win four consecutive titles. Steve Kinser (no surprise) is the other one.
Over in late model land, Kid Rocket Josh Richards came of age and finally did what everybody knew he could do - win the Late Model Championship. Richards, 21, entered the evening’s action holding a narrow four-point edge over 2007 WoO LMS champion Steve Francis of Ashland, Ky., and extended it to a final margin of 14 points by making a smooth, steady advance from the 14th starting spot. Francis was never a factor, slipping backward from the 10th starting position and finishing 12th to leave him the tour’s points runner-up for the fourth time in his career.
Great time to be a WoO fan!
