Federal Judge Terrence F. McVerry of the U.S. District Court of the Western District of Pennsylvania dismissed a federal anti-trust lawsuit brought by Specialty Tires of America against World Racing Group and Hoosier Racing Tire.
The ruling brings to an end two battle between two of the largest manufacturers of race tires in the country. Specialty Tires of America contended that Hoosier violated anti-trust laws through their agreements with and sponsorships of sanctioning bodies where they required competitors to use Hoosier tires exclusively. This spec tire rule has become popular in many forms of short track racing. In the ruling Judge McVerry noted that “no antitrust injury to Specialty Tire occurs when it loses the competitive battle to be the exclusive [tire] supplier”
