Wouldn't it be great if we could put the stock back into Stock Car racing? That's not a new idea, but has resurfaced somewhat lately. Let's dream a little and see what could develop...
The accompanying photo is one of the very first Camaro race cars ever built and this was its first race in the 1967 24 Hours of Daytona. The photographer was a 15 year old fella who grew up in that town and was fortunate enough to be able to attend all of the races at that track in those years for free.
I was a Ford GT and Mustang fan then, but shot this lone photo of the number 36 Camaro. I had to be quick because it fell out of the race with mechanical problems soon after this was taken. The Roger Penske entry would make history and this is made from a truly historic negative I found while rummaging through a bunch of old photos the other day. It made me think.
The co-driver, the late and great Mark Donahue, went on to dominate the series with those cars. I began to imagine, could we bring back those glory days with a circle track version of the 2010 Camaro? It is after all a retro version of the '68 Camaro, just like the one in the photo. Hmmmm. Juan never knows.
