Jeremy Mayfield wins a temporary injuction against a Nascar suspension that will allow him to race again in Sprint Cup. Is this kind of interference good for the sport of auto racing? Here are some thoughts I have....
I am the first to say that I think the bosses at Nascar go a little too far sometimes in their dealings with the teams and drivers on issues related to rules transgressions.
One case in point, poor Carl Long was handed a death sentence for buying a gun from someone who killed someone with it (an analogy)...so to speak. He bought an engine from a respected engine builder, did not alter that engine, and when it was found a teeny bit over size, they threw the book at him. What about the engine builder. He pulled the trigger for Gods sake. Why didn't Nascar fine him and suspend him?
In the case of Jeremy, we don't know the facts, only the results of tests. This act by Nascar was a response that was trying to keep the other drivers and fans safe. We cannot have any driver getting into a race car after having done physically imparing drugs.
So, if the government cannot or will not enforce the rules meant to protect innocent bystanders, then the ruling body must. I really don't think the courts have any business getting into this unless somebody is flat lying on either side. And, Jeremy must get through tech inspection before he hits the track. Think it'll be easy, guess again.
