I was talking to one of our readers the other day. He was concerned about how we presented driver and track safety. He had some ideas....
Fred pointed out the drivers can be injured in a number of ways related to the brain, neck and brain stem. The concensus was that there is not a 100%, fool proof way to cover all of the bases. And I agree with that conclusion. Just when we think we are completely "safe", a new and unexpected type of crash happens.
Let's face it, racing is, and always will be, very dangerous. All of you parents out there who let your 14 year old race...don't for a minute think that the worst cannot happen, it can and will. Participants assume the risk. That is why it is an adult decision, or should be.
The right thing to do is try to cover all of the bases at our disposal. Use head and neck restraints, they do a good job of preventing SOME types of injuries. Use the best seat with side restraints and use widow netting. The closer we get to 100% safe, the more we can enjoy this sport and live to tell about it.
