Last weekend the USARacing Pro Cup Series kicked off its season opener at Concord Speedway. The Circle Track Project Car was there and was extremely quick.
The car unloaded off the trailer on Friday to go through the safety inspection and tech that the USARacing Officials mandate. After we had passed tech and the safety inspection, we hit the track for a three-hour practice on Friday. When Friday's practice concluded we were third fastest on the sheets. Saturday brought qualifying and then the race. We qualified 7th a couple of tenths off of the pole. However, once the race started we quickly learned that we had a problem. The right front wheel had started backing the nuts off and was creating a bad vibration in the car. This caused us to drop a lap down pretty early. We came in under the first caution and changed out the right side tires. We used track position and pit strategy to get the "lucky dog" and get back on the lead lap. We restarted in 10th and was working our way back up to the front when another driver put us into the fence. It bent the left rear truck arm, and flattened out the spoiler. The car was just too much of a handful to drive after that. We salvaged what we could but we finished 14th 7 laps down.
We will be doing a full write-up on the event in the coming issues of Circle Track. We will talk about some of the changes we made during practice and continue to show what it takes to contend for the championship.
Look for the Circle Track car at South Georgia Motorsports Park on April 25th.
