I was watching TV the other night of the World of Outlaws Dirt Late Models running at the Virginia Motor Speedway when right before my eyes, there were indications of traction control....
The telecast was a good one with plenty of action shots, in car cameras, and suspension cams. A couple of times in the show, they included a view of the left rear wheel and suspension showing the wheel, brake rotor, shocks and suspension links.
Shane Andrews, one of the announcers said to Ken Schrader (whom we all know and love), that he saw the brake rotor glowing red and asked Ken to comment on it. Schrader said the driver was probably using the rear brakes to setup for the turns. Oh yea....here we go.
If you watch the video, the chassis raises up in the turns and then lays down once the car straightens out and accelerates down the stretch. If you watch the suspension movement along with the rotor starting to glow, you see that the brakes "are applied" as the car comes off the corners and the driver applies the throttle, not going into the corner.
There is a form of traction control called brake control whereby the system applies rear brake pressure to control wheel spin unlike other systems which work with the motor to control wheel spin. In this case, it looks a lot like the former. What do you think?
