Formula One is about to change the way points are awarded to determine a champion. Is this good for the sport?
I know F1 doesn't rule the racing world, but we do need to keep an eye on other forms of racing and how they manage their programs. This is because the series or sanction we race under may pay attention and the changes made in F1 might end up affecting our racing, not that I would agree with that line of thinking.
In F1, it has been proposed, but not set in stone right now, that the driver with the most wins will win the championship, regardless of points. Then second through the rest of the field is determined by points. It sounds like someone lost last year and had more wins, then complained to whomever and.....well you get the picture.
I agree, wins should carry weight, but not in this degree. The proper thing to do is to give the winner a larger share of the points over second place, etc. Then the wins might really affect the outcome.
A word to other rulers of racing, don't think for a minute that this F1 plan is a good idea, it is not. There are much better ways of weighting the driver with the most wins while preserving the integrity of the points system.
